How to Grade Math-U-See Worksheets (Homeschool Guide)
Math-U-See is a mastery program: your child stays on a lesson until they really have it. That makes grading less about the score and more about one question — are they ready for the next lesson? Here's a routine that answers it quickly.
How Math-U-See is set up
- Each level (Alpha, Beta, Gamma and so on) focuses on one main topic, taught one concept per lesson.
- Lesson practice pages work on the new concept; systematic review pages mix it with earlier lessons.
- Lesson tests and unit tests check mastery, and the solutions or instruction materials include the answers.
- Your child doesn't have to finish every page — you move on once they can teach the concept back to you.
A simple grading routine
- Grade the first lesson practice page right away. If it's mostly right, your child may be ready to skip ahead to review pages.
- On review pages, sort mistakes into "new lesson" and "old lesson" — they mean different things.
- If new-lesson problems are wrong, use another lesson practice page before moving on.
- If old-lesson problems are wrong, revisit that concept with the blocks for a few minutes.
- Use the lesson test as your go/no-go: most families move on at around 90% or better.
- Ask your child to explain one problem out loud — Math-U-See's "teach it back" step catches gaps a score misses.
Where Marqer saves time
- Photograph a worksheet and Marqer grades every problem and points out the pattern in the mistakes.
- Set the curriculum note to "Math-U-See" so feedback fits a mastery approach.
- The report card shows scores over time, which makes the "ready to move on?" call easier to see.
What to still check yourself
- The teach-back step is yours — no grader can check whether your child understands the blocks.
- Double-check anything marked wrong if the handwriting is hard to read.

Do I have to grade every Math-U-See page?
No. Because it's a mastery program, many families skip extra practice pages once a child shows mastery. Grade enough to be sure, then move on.
What score means my child is ready for the next lesson?
There's no single rule, but many families look for around 90% or better on the lesson test plus a clear explanation out loud.
Can Marqer grade Math-U-See tests?
Yes. Photograph the finished test and Marqer marks each problem and explains any mistakes.
